An Evening with Roxane Gay
Last night, I attended a discussion with Roxane Gay and it opened my mind to so many things. Ms. Gay was a hit with the crowd from the very beginning with her jokes and funny remarks. She read a passage from her book that stood out most to me regarding her dislike of going to the doctors office. She talked about how doctors offices were made for small people and how whenever she went they didn't have a big enough weight scale or pressure cuff. Her discussion of how the first thing a doctor sees about her is her weight hit close to home and really opened my eyes. I learned about how an entire group of our society is being shunned by the people who are sworn to help them. I had always planned on becoming a doctor when I was older and hearing her talk of her experiences made me think of how I could make a difference in people lives by just doing simple things. I would like to think that if or when I become a doctor I would make sure that all my patients felt welcome. If I could I would ask Ms. Gay if she has had any positive experiences with a doctor or what she thinks doctors and the medical community as a whole should do to help change the stigma around not being society's ideal size.
